Bridging the gap between prison and community. Unchained was founded in 2018 by Derek Singletary and Emily NaPier Singletary, who are both from Syracuse. Derek is a Black man midway through a 20year prison sentence, currently incarcerated at Elmira maximum security prison and pursuing his Bachelors degree from behind the wall. Emily is a white woman who has worked in the field of criminal justice reform for more than 15 years as an organizer, advocate, researcher, and educator.
