The Star of the North Maternity Home provides safe homes and programming for pregnant women and women with young children experiencing housing instability to improve their health and and the health of their children, while moving toward self-sufficiency
Programs
2 programs
SON Iron Range We purchased, completed major renovations of $186k and moved into a 6 bedroom maternity home grant funded through support from SLC and private grants. Our SON IR home can assist Moms with more than one child. We assisted 7 women and 10 babies/children during the year. We had 4 Moms who stayed over a year in the program working towards independence. The Moms and staff love the home like environment as we moved from leased apartments to a real home. They now can cook together, hang out and the courtyards provide a safe play area for our children.
0SON Twin Ports Assisted 11 moms and 9 children during FY 23-24. We had Moms who were able to enroll in college and begin their educational journey to self sufficiency. We assisted pregnant women and most moved to independent housing after leaving us. Residents prepare their own breakfasts, lunches, and snacks, and plan the dinner menu and prepare the evening meal together. By doing so, they learn how to plan and prepare nutritious, cost-effective meals for themselves and their children. Onsite training provided skills in health and nutrition, budgeting, dental care, parenting, and more. We had mission teams support us with outdoor projects and we added a new driveway to our home which helps with off street parking for the safety of Moms and Staff/Volunteers.
