Transatlantic week - as a key milestone for the advancement of the compass project and to deliver our educational purpose tpn was delighted to convene our flagship signature event - transatlantic week 2024 in brussels on april 2-3, 2024. Under the title "challenges ahead for eu-us relations: developing a roadmap towards 2030, delegates had the opportunity to review progress and successes with transatlantic relations to date, to define shorter-term priorities for action, and to recommit to longer-term partnership goals. They also had the opportunity to network with professional colleagues and personal friends from the united states building long term ties and bridges. Tpn staffer network - during 2024, tpn established a staffer network. It is open to staff working for members of the us congress and the european parliament who understand the importance of the transatlantic relationship and desire to foster it. In a dynamic geopolitical environment, affecting policy and political priorities on both sides of the atlantic, the role of steadfast, structural staff-to-staff contacts becomes even more relevant for the transatlantic relationship. As such, tpn made it a priority to build, grow, and consolidate the staffers network in 2024 and will continue to do so in the months and years ahead. In 2024 and early 2025, led by a small group of six members, the staffers network grew in size to about 50 active participants, who met in person in december 2024 and in january 2025 in brussels and washington d.c. Tpn plans to host two additional in-person events dedicated to staffers in 2025 and to make the staffers network an integral part of transatlantic week in washington dc in july. To keep the connections alive and to add value to the network, tpn is also planning periodic virtual discussions where staff, experts, and industry can discuss critical issues of importance to the eu and the us and exchange views on political and policy issues of relevance to their work and to the transatlantic relationship.
Tpn project: "fireproofing the eu us relationship: in search of a new compass" - there continues to be a growing belief that urgent action has to be taken to strengthen the eu us relationship given the broad and deepening challenges lying ahead. We are living through a geopolitical whirlwind which is causing a real sense of fragility. The danger is that instability is becoming a permanent phenomenon. Certainly, americans and europeans share a stake in the unpredictable direction of the war in ukraine; the growing competition with china; the regulatory simplification of the digital economy and the threat posed by climate change. Mostly, it is the us relationship with the eu that will be pivotal for tackling these issues, not through nato. These mounting geopolitical and transnational challenges can only effectively be met with a fireproofing of the eu us relationship. The tpn compass project is setting out a simple way to establish a strengthened partnership framework. These ideas are part of the tpn's overall vision of towards transatlantic partnership 2030.
