Valo creates spaces where teens can get away from it all, feel independent, unplug, and have fun. A place of belonging for youth to have deep conversations and feel empowered as they ignite a future with hope.

Twilight: Took teens on six weekend retreats in 2023. On these retreats, guides helped teens come to know themselves and learn how to connect meaningfully with others (while unplugged) through communal living, conversations, creating, time to themselves, safe risk taking, and journal reflections. In addition, seniors in the program took on leadership roles by designing and leading many aspects of the retreats.

Equinox: Took teens on six weekend retreats in 2024. On these retreats, guides helped teens come to know themselves and learn how to connect meaningfully with others (while unplugged) through communal living, conversations, creating, and time to themselves, safe risk taking, and journal reflections. In addition, seniors in program took on leadership roles by designing and leading many aspects of the retreats, most significantly the group conversations.

School & Exploratory: Valo offered six afternoon "retreats" in the winter and spring, and culminated the program with a 1-night retreat in the summer. On these retreats, new teens experienced similar activities as those would on a regular retreat, including conversations, cooking, time in nature, creating projects, journaling, and time alone.

Expenses: $70K

Partner: Valo did significant outreach in 2024 and collaborated with schools and other youth serving organizations to bring Valo programming to them. Each partner program was a 1-night, 2-day retreat for the group, and then Valo met periodically following that retreat to continue mentoring the participants in conversation skills. These programs are fee-for-service; in some cases, the organization or school paid, and in other cases we had grants to cover the costs.
