Programs
2 programs
Education/visitor experience and servicesthe wadsworth offers a wide range of activities and services for many audiences and communities. Two highly successful programs that serve students are art and writing and museum on the move. Both were developed collaboratively with hartford public school educators and support building visual literacy at the middle-school level. Art and writing explores emotive and aesthetic qualities of figurative works of art to enhance narrative, descriptive and expository writing skills. Museum on the move uses visual analysis of landscapes to improve students' descriptive writing and oral presentation skills. Goals of the programs are to ensure that students receive meaningful instruction in and through the visual arts; to use the arts to improve children's confidence and inspire creativity; to improve students' literacy (reading, writing, and oral presentation skills); to facilitate the integration of the museum's collections and exhibitions into core curricula; to increase integration of art into curricula to address literacy objectives; to strengthen students' ability for thoughtful visual analysis and reflection; and to increase interdisciplinary collaboration between classroom and art teachers. Expected program outcomes are as follows: 70% of students will build their critical response skills. Indicators include use of art terminology, engagement in critical thinking, and supporting ideas/opinions with visual evidence; 75% of students will feel empowered by their experiences with art and the museum. Indicators include connecting the art to their own experiences, knowledge, or ideas, and an increased comfort level in students' ability to talk, think, and write about artworks; and 70% of students will be exposed to different perspectives of seeing and thinking through experiences with art. Indicators include articulating similarities and differences in art made by different people, and from different places and eras. Museum. This event was part of a series of related activities supported by the wadsworth and the amistad center for art & culture designed to bring the history of hartford's first black church and school for black children into public view. Both art and writing and museum on the move programs continually meet anticipated outcomes. Teachers responding to routinely administered surveys report that students frequently demonstrated critical response skills during the program, including identifying specific elements from works of art to support their opinions, make observations, and formulate opinions. An 85% of participating teachers stated that they saw evidence of learning from the classroom lesson from students who visited the museum a week after the classroom lessons. Teachers also reported that students frequently connected the art they saw to their own experiences and feelings, an indicator of empowerment, and that the selected artworks frequently inspired students to see and think differently. An 85% of teachers agreed that artworks inspired students to see and think differently, and 100% of teachers reported that our educators asked questions that prompted students to share their ideas. Tours for intergenerational audiences, music, and live performance. An especially successful martin luther king, jr. Community day celebrated the legacy of dr. King through art making, performances, and tours for all ages.
Other program expenses: other program expenses include marketing, public relations, membership, museum shop, theater and other miscellaneous.
