Shelter and community veterinary services - whs provides comprehensive medical services for animals in our care, ranging from routine care to advanced surgical procedures. In fy24, our medical team performed 6,603 spay/neuter surgeries and provided 34,514 additional medical services, including exams, diagnostics, special surgeries, and vaccinations. In total, 16,272 animals were cared for by whs medical staff over the course of the year.our veterinary program supports both shelter animals and community pets, with services tailored to support population health, emergency care, and individual treatment plans. To improve access to care, affordability is maintained across services, ensuring that cost is not a barrier to critical veterinary treatment. Whs prioritizes early intervention and medical treatment as a core strategy to maintain high live release rates, minimize suffering, and to help keep pets at home.

Expenses: $5.1M

Animal care and adoptions - animal care services and adoptions include the intake of homeless animals, coordination for animal foster care, pet adoptions, and animal behavior support across whs campuses in washington, dc and madison, nj. In fy24, whs admitted 11,119 animals, including 3,709 animals who were transported to partner shelters to support a healthy and sustainable animal population flow. To support community-based animal wellbeing and prevent crowding at the animal shelter, 5,688 animals were placed in foster homes with whs's broad, dedicated network of volunteers. In total, whs engaged 55,033 volunteer hours across both campuses to support daily animal care, foster care, and customer service.our pet support teams responded to 18,295 calls for help from the public regarding support with animal care, adoptions, lost pets, and the need for pet resources. While the pet support teams serve as a vital connection point between residents and the services their animals need.our behavior team facilitated 10,145 individualized training and enrichment sessions, improving animals' quality of life and helping to build confidence, reduce stress, and prepare for successful adoption and foster placements. Our focus on high-quality care, behavior support, and access to foster placement ensures that each animal receives the resources needed for a safe and successful transition to a new home.
