William Averette Anderson Fund

Research: The Bill Anderson Fund demonstrated research leadership through collaborative projects with organizational partners. It contributed to knowledge development within the hazards and disaster field through applied research that was used to provide mission-relevant information to organizations responsible for responding to extreme events, including topics related to food insecurity, hazard mitigation investments, recovery and rebuilding services, housing and public and environmental health. The organization provided hands-on research training, research application experiences, and science communication opportunities to its doctoral student fellows to strengthen their capacity to make policy linkages, advance evidence-based practice, and service as thought leaders in disaster science.

Professional Development: The Bill Anderson Fund delivered workshops that provided its doctoral student fellows with tailored professional development training, platforms for research presentations, and networking opportunities within the broader hazards and disaster field. The organization's internal professionalization programs cultivated a personal and professional support network involving peer- and near-peer-based connections that further supported the fellows' educational matriculation and advance their research. These internal programs also supported skill development in areas such as science writing and communication, project management, event planning, leaderships, and inter-organizational and interdisciplinary collaboration. The Bill Anderson Fund established individual mentoring relationships that identified and targeted students' professional development needs such as career planning, navigation of degree program requirements, development of research agendas, and pursuit of funding strategies. Additionally, the organization maintained a weekly publication that connected its current fellows and program alumni to job and publication opportunities, research funding opportunities, professional meetings, and training experiences.
