Transport of Dangerous Goods: To ensure consistency between regulatory systems worldwide, the United Nations (UN) established a Sub-Committee dedicated to developing appropriate harmonization regulations for the transport of dangerous goods. The UN Sub-Committee of Experts (SCE) on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (TDG) considers proposed changes to the UN Model Recommendations on TDG. The World Coatings Council is proactively engaged in UN efforts to harmonize the model regulations, ensuring efficiency and cost-effectiveness for cross-border and multi-modal shipments of paint and allied products. WCC attends UN SCE TDG meetings to present proposals and advocate for reasonable hazmat transportation regulations on behalf of industry.

The UN created the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) to ensure a consistent, global understanding of hazards caused by chemicals. The UN GHS is an international system that classifies chemicals by type of hazard and harmonizes hazard communication elements, including labels and safety data sheets, used by many countries as the basis for labeling regulations. Harmonization occurs biennially during the meeting of the UN Subcommittee of Experts on the GHS. The American Coatings Association, through its Occupational Health and Safety Committee, and the World Coatings Council are proactively engaged in efforts to promote harmonization, ensuring the effective and technically sound classification of chemicals and labeling requirements.
