Mission

To train disadvantaged teens to create multimedia journalism on health & safety solutions.

Programs

2 programs

In-school training: ymg instructors conduct virtual and in-person reporting, writing and social media training for high school students during the school day, after school and/or during school vacations. Students are paid for work that meets minimum standards for publication. These articles have run in outlets, including the washington blade and black news and views.

Expenses: $107K

Independent content creation: ymg staff and contract journalist-instructors work independently (outside of schools, boot camps and workshops) with high school students and college interns on articles, videos and social media content. Student participants learn interviewing, good writing and other useful skills for journalism and other fields, such as caption, headline and pull quote writing, along with social media promotion, website posting and graphic design. These articles have run in publications including the providence journal, inside climate news and usa today. Some college interns also learn nonprofit management by working on our operations side. Students in all of our programs cover the social determinants of health - such as access to safe, affordable housing and healthy food, road safety, personal finance and health equity.
