Buildings & groundsopened in 1929 as a single building adjacent to the campus of the johns hopkins university, the bma now comprises 10 contiguous buildings and wings (210,000 sq. Ft.), one historic structure, and two outdoor sculpture gardens (3 acres). The museum works diligently to maintain and preserve our building envelope to protect its priceless collection. The last renovation project completed was the joseph education center (jec): offering hands-on installations, art-making spaces, and activities. The mechanical and electrical systems which received significant upgrades during multiple renovations are now achieving important economies in energy management. The bma's engineering staff followed a detailed schedule of preventative maintenance to ensure the longevity of these systems. Security was assured through a trained security and a 24-hour surveillence system.

Education & interpretationbma's education initiatives and public programs served 37,243 families, visitors, students, teachers, and community residents throughout the region. Students participated in field trips, including our 3rd grade multi-visit program close encounters; families participated in programs ranging from baby art date to our large-scale community days; and adults attended artist talks, scholarly discussions, and dynamic programming such as art after hours. As a result of the newly-opened joseph education center in december, we welcomed 2,751 families and adult visitors alike to our weekly free family sundays art-making workshops. At the bma lexington market location, 5,677 children and adult visitors visited our drop-in artmaking and artist-facilitated workshops. The art-to-go educator resource was distributed via email to over 3,200 educators around the world.
