To protect homeschooled children from abuse and neglect by conducting novel research on homeschooling outcomes to educate both professionals and the public and provide free resources for children and families.

Research: For over a decade, staff and volunteers have compiled Homeschoolings Invisible Children (HIC), the worlds only database of homeschooled child abuse cases. This interactive, searchable database contains nearly 500 such cases, including nearly 200 fatalities that have occurred since 2000. CRHEs research and operations director has developed a live webinar-based training program to teach child welfare professionals how to recognize and prevent all types of abuse and neglect in homeschool settings. The training has been met with enthusiasm by dozens of participants. We presented both a live version of the training at the Crimes Against Children conference in Dallas in 2024, and an on-demand version will be provided to virtual attendees. Future training sessions are scheduled with stakeholders across the country, including state-based agencies like child protective services and child advocacy centers. CRHE also tracks and analyzes state-based legislation that impacts homeschooled children.

Education: CRHE maintains an extensive website, responsiblehomeschooling.org, that provides a compendium of information about homeschooling in the US. The website includes pages on homeschooling policy in all 50 states; resources to help homeschooling families create a high school transcript and diploma; access to our database and our research reports; and a set of guides for homeschooling parents. CRHE is a critical voice for homeschooled children in the media. In 2023, we consulted on an episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, helped inform a series of articles on homeschooling in the Washington Post, and appeared prominently in Amazon Primes Shiny Happy People documentary on abuse in homeschooling families. In 2024, we have been cited in editorials by the Washington Post and Scientific American editorial boards endorsing homeschool reform as well as an episode of NPRs Fresh Air. CRHE also answers regular phone, text, social media, and email questions about homeschooling that come from across the globe. We offer a webinar series to educate on the origins of the homeschool movement and the implications that it has for children today.
