Mission

Dedicated to increasing opportunity & integration into the community for people with disabilities as well as developing healthy communities in which all people are welcomed and fully accepted. The institute's approach to it's mission is grounded on three fundamental pillars encompassing mind, body, and spirit. The institute will provide state-of-the-art learning opportunities and education for persons with disabilities, their families and the entire community. The institute will provide education and constructive services to professionals and other persons who treat, educate, work with or interact with persons with disabilities. The institute will provide healthy activities for all persons encouraging engagement in physical endeavors, to promote a healthy and vibrant lifestyle for persons with disabilities and the entire community. And finally, by increasing involvement and participation of individuals with disabilities in the arts, we weave a richer & more diverse community for all.

For 17 years, the institute has sponsored a community art show, "celebrating the possibilities," to bring together youth and adult artists from the region with artists with disabilities or behavioral health challenges. 2023 saw the first hybrid experience of both in-person and online shows. The event in 2024 was, again, hybrid and in-person with more than 400 pieces on display by known and upcoming talented adult and youth artists from across the tri-state area, including the artwork of our very own students and adults of the barber institute. The unique and beautiful artwork included paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, photography, mixed media and works in fiber.

The autism manual is used to educate professionals treating individuals with autism as well as families of children living with the challenges of autism. The manual has been sold to a variety of users such as individuals, bookstores, and colleges which use the book in their curriculum for the behavioral specialist certificate programs. In 2023, an extensive revision of the autism manual was completed, and sales of the revised manual continue in 2024.
