The mission of food bank for new york city is to end hunger by organizing food, information and support for community survival and dignity.

Programs

Nutrition education: food bank for nyc provides nutrition education for children, teens and adults, encourages the development and adoption of healthy diets and promotes healthy eating in communities throughout new york city. In fy24, over 60,000 participants were engaged in nutrition education workshops and most significantly through its cookshop program in schools.

Expenses: $2.9MGrants: $12K

Income tax preparation services: food bank for nyc's free tax preparation services with focus on earned income tax credit for low to moderate-income new yorkers connects eligible individuals to tax refunds to provide them greater food and financial security. In fy24, over 20,000 returns were prepared and filed under its free tax preparation services and financial workshops.

Other program services: community kitchen and food pantry. Opened in 1984, the community kitchen and food pantry is a resource and service center for the community of west harlem. It operates a congregate meal program, a consumer-choice food pantry as well as free tax preparation services and supplemental nutrition assistance program enrollment.

Benefits access: fbnyc provides workshops to inform and educate low-income new yorkers and community-based organizations on government food assistance programs and provide access to resources to help communities move toward more sustainable strategies for combatting food insecurity. Food bank for nyc conducts snap training and provides technical assistance on eligibility screenings for community-based organizations and provides also provides direct client services as well. In fy24, food bank for nyc provided services that resulted in over 9,600 enrollments for snap benefits, 8% higher than the previous year.
