Research: The Research program at Meedan bridges theoretical knowledge with practical application, focusing on Natural Language Processing and AI. It supports the Co-insights project, which aimed to enhance information contextualization for underserved Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. That project finished in 2024.through cross-regional initiatives and partnerships in South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America. The projects work with feminist groups, civil society organizations and digital safety experts to document and combat gendered disinformation, particularly around election times, fostering a deeper understanding and developing effective counter-strategies. The projects support community learning and adapt technology to meet the challenges of gendered disinformation at the regional level as well as globally.
Community Impact Programs: In 2024, we partnered with 73 media and civil society organizations across the Larger World, the United States, and Europe. We organized our programmatic work along three key verticals: elections, safe and inclusive information ecosystems, and crisis preparedness and response. In total, our program partners throughout the Larger World (our preferred term for the Global South) drove impactful information integrity coalitions, published hundreds of original articles and multimedia products, and led dynamics training programs. Check, our open source fact-checking software, formed the technical backbone for key initiatives focused on information integrity and elections. As part of our work on elections, we supported projects in several countries, including Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, India, Mongolia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Our program team worked with leading partner organizations to build election-focused information integrity coalitions. We also collaborated with civil society and media organizations in crisis and conflict areas. During the flooding surge in Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state, for example, we worked with local partners to disseminate fact-checked content addressing the rising tide of flood-related misinformation.
Gendered Disinformation: The Gendered Disinformation projects address the spread and impact of gender-targeted misinformation through cross-regional initiatives and partnerships in South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America.
