Mission

The mission of the musuem of contemporary art is to contemporary art accesible to diverse audiences - especially underserved populations through the collection, preservation and exhibition of the best of contemporary art and its art historical influences. In fiscal year 2024, the museum of contemporary art, north miami (moca) continued its mission of making contemporary art accessible to the diverse communities of south florida. With a legacy spanning over 25 years, moca welcomed more than 60,000 visitors annually, offering free admission to north miami residents and presenting a dynamic slate of exhibitions, educational programs, and public events.

Programs

Education and youth engagement moca's education department served over 750 individuals through seasonal art camps, teen after-school programs, and hands-on workshops. Approximately 1,200 students from miami-dade county public schools and local universities received free access to exhibitions, workshops, and performances. Key education initiatives included: teen art force: free after-school art foundation courses for teens, offered october through may. Summer art camp: a 10-week program for youth ages 6-13, with scholarships awarded to up to 50% of campers. Junior docents program: over 40 hours of training for w.j. Bryan elementary school students in public speaking, leadership, and career readiness. Mini makers & sunday stories: free monthly programs for children ages 1-12, combining storytelling, tours, and artmaking.

Community outreach and partnerships moca expanded its off-site programming through partnerships with local schools, libraries, and senior centers: moca at the library: weekly free art workshops for middle and high school students at north miami public library and brockway memorial library. Art workshops for seniors: monthly (and later bi-monthly) hands-on art sessions at the joe celestin center in partnership with the city of north miami's housing & social services department. Community tours: 4-6 free exhibition tours annually for local schools and community partners, with optional hands-on workshops.

Public programs and cultural events moca's free public programs fostered community dialogue and cultural appreciation: jazz at moca: monthly outdoor concerts featuring diverse jazz genres, with extended gallery hours and free admission. Conversations at moca: 3-4 annual panel discussions with artists and thought leaders. Artist & curator tours: guided tours accompanying each major exhibition. Moca also actively participated in over a dozen city of north miami events, including la gran fiesta, haitian flag day, juneteenth, earth day, and the annual tree lighting ceremony, further embedding the museum in the cultural fabric of the community.
