Mission
To strengthen the local food system by supporting new mexico's agricultural producers and creating strong networks for a healthier state. This involves educating the public about eating healthy, locally grown and produced food; engaging low-income and limited-resource individuals and families in creating healthy eating habits; promoting nurition access programs at farmers' markets and other retail outlets; providing marketing support to farmers, ranchers, market managers, value chain coordinators, and other stakeholders who work within the local food system throughout new mexico. The nmfma manages the statewide double up food bucks program. This nutrtion access program provides recipients of the supplemental nutrition assistance program (snap) with dollar-for-dollar match to shop at new mexico farmers' markets and other food retailers to purchase fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, promoting and encouraging healthy eating habits. Approximate number of customers served annually:45,oo0; approximate number of people served (with family members) 92,000; total retail outlets (farmers markets, farm stands, grocery stores) 59; number of counties servec: 29 (out of 33); number of farmers: 700; total annual snap and double up sales: 2 million. This program serves the general public of new mexico.
The nmfma manages the statewide approved supplier program. This food quality assurance program operates as the backbone to the state's farm-to- institution program called "new mexico grown." the approved supplier program allows agriculture producers of all scales to sell their locally grown food to new mexico's early childcare centers, the public schools, and senior centers through their repsective state agencies. It also allows these same producers to feed new mexicans via grocery stores and through food is medicine programs managed by the nmfma with health clinic partners across the state. An estimated 250 producers are part of the approved supplier program with sales of about 5 million per year. This values driven program seeks to ensure all producers have access to institutional markets, and that factors such as regenerative agriculture practices are formalized into local procurement strategies.
