Preventing plastic pollution: ocean conservancy empowers citizens, businesses, governments and ngos at the local, state, national and international level to reduce the global plastic footprint and to stop the flow of 11 million tons of trash and plastic flowing into the ocean annually. We implement and organize the international coastal cleanup, one of the largest single day volunteer events on behalf of the ocean, responsible for preventing and removing more than 300 million pounds of trash and plastic from our ocean, coasts and waterways, and engaging millions of volunteers on behalf of the ocean. We partner with cities and municipalities to implement innovative ocean plastic reduction efforts. We advocate, informed by the best available science and data, to eliminate the most problematic forms of single use plastic packaging and products. We foster best practices among key stakeholders to create new, innovative approaches to prevent and remove ghost fishing gear - the single deadliest form of plastic in the ocean.
Ocean-based solutions: ocean conservancy is working to advance solutions to address one of the greatest challenges facing the ocean: climate change. We work with key partners and decision-makers at the local, state, national and international level to develop, inform and advocate for ocean-specific solutions to climate change. Our work engages people at all levels to advance meaningful solutions that directly address the concerns of coastal citizens, show that ocean and climate-related actions are possible to protect our incredible ocean, coastal environments and wildlife - and the people, businesses and communities that depend on them.
Marine ecosystem protection: ocean conservancy works at the local, state, federal and international level to advance conservation solutions, using the best available evidence and community knowledge, to protect ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. We advance protections for culturally and ecologically important arctic ecosystems, working in partnership with tribes and indigenous communities. We work at the regional, national and international level to rebuild ecologically important fisheries, partnering with fishermen and local communities to advance durable protections through meaningful, innovative approaches to management and policy outcomes in the face of biodiversity loss and climate change.
