Mission

The mission of special olympics is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other special olympics athletes, and the community.

Special olympics pennsylvania is dedicated to a holistic approach to athlete well-being, providing essential healthcare services and contributing to systemic health improvements. In november, our cornerstone healthy athletes program proudly celebrated over 15,000 free health screenings delivered to special olympics athletes across the commonwealth, addressing critical health needs at no cost.beyond direct service, our commitment to athlete health is significantly amplified through innovative initiatives like project all star, a collaborative research endeavor. This project rigorously examines the long-term positive impact of special olympics participation on athletes' physical, social-emotional, and mental health, generating evidence to inform and enhance our programs for even greater impact.further extending our reach, the newly launched rosemary collaboratory leverages data, including insights from initiatives like the missing billion, to strategically inform efforts to improve health outcomes for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Working closely with partner organizations, the collaboratory focuses on supporting policy changes, enhancing workforce development, and contributing to advocacy for improved governance and data collection. Through these partnerships, it aims to dismantle healthcare barriers and promote health equity.together, these initiatives, from direct screenings to in-depth research and collaborative efforts toward systemic change, underscore our unwavering commitment to empowering athletes to reach their full potential and establishing special olympics as a global leader in enhancing the health of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Expenses: $1.9M

Special olympics pennsylvania is deeply committed to enhancing the health and fitness of our athletes year-round, both on and off the field, through targeted and inclusive programs.our athlete performance training (apt) program, an 8-week in-season fitness initiative embedded directly into sports practices, continues to show significant positive trends. Since its inception in 2022, nearly 600 instances of athletes having fully completed apt, demonstrate consistent positive or stable health outcomes. Notably, 28% of participants have shown improvement in cardio fitness (with 63.3% maintaining levels), and 88.1% have maintained their bmi levels, with repeat participants often continuing to improve or maintain.complementing this, unified fitness, our off-season, 12-week program, is forging inclusive communities by bringing together athletes and unified partners for regular training. Launched in spring 2024, early results are highly promising: participants are showing average improvements across measures of strength, balance, and endurance. Beyond physical gains, unified fitness is successfully fostering new, valuable partnerships and expanding access to vital community-based fitness opportunities.together, apt and unified fitness underscore our dedication to providing comprehensive fitness pathways that empower athletes, promote healthy lifestyles, and build truly inclusive communities across the commonwealth.

Expenses: $1.0M

Special olympics pennsylvania is dedicated to providing year-round sports training and competition opportunities for athletes and unified partners across the commonwealth. In 2024, we proudly hosted 933 total competitive events, a substantial increase from the 794 competitions delivered in 2023. This growth, encompassing both traditional and unified sports, was primarily driven by expanded unified competition sports (ucs) offerings, directly supported by our growth in the number of schools engaged with 511 schools participating in 2024 compared to 441 in 2023.

Expenses: $880K

The transformative work of special olympics pennsylvania is powered by the unwavering dedication of our volunteers, who are the backbone of our programs. In 2024, our volunteer force grew to 10,265 individuals, marking a remarkable increase from the 6,464 volunteers who supported our mission in 2023. This growth is a testament to our enhanced data management, as the implementation of a single crm system now allows us to more comprehensively track all our constituents, including volunteers, in one centralized system. This broader capture of volunteer engagement, notably including 5,152 youth volunteers (aged 8-25), also highlights our success in fostering a pipeline where unified partners and athletes transition from school-based programs into vital community volunteers, reinforcing a lifelong commitment to the special olympics movement.
