As a result of the university's acquisition of the largest gift in campus history, the university will establish the science of reading center (sorc) at suny new paltz. The sorc at suny new paltz offers a hub for educators with a shared mission of improving literacy outcomes for children across the u.s., by promoting research-backed knowledge and practices that are proven to help learners gain skills as readers. The center features a new, first-of-its-kind science of reading fundamentals microcredential for new york in-service teachers, undergraduates and graduate candidates in the educator preparation program, as well as the university's second endowed professorship.the science of reading fundamentals microcredential launched in fall 2023 as a fully online, self-paced program designed to help new york's p-12 teachers gain familiarity with the research-based building blocks of literacy instruction. Participants will have the ability to engage with instructors and experts during real-time webinars and will accrue 35 ctle hours upon completion of the microcredential, which can be done in as little as seven weeks.during fiscal year 2023-24, over 7,000 educators registered for the science of reading fundamentals microcredential. The foundation was able to fund science of reading microcredential awards to 1,667 individuals.

The samuel dorsky museum of art in 2023-2024, offered six well-received and well-attended major exhibitions of contemporary and historical work that received media placements in several local and national outlets including chronogram, and hudson valley one, among others. Highlights of the exhibition program included notes for tomorrow, purple haze: art and drugs across the americas, hudson valley artists 2024: bibliography, global connections: work by miguel covarrubias, isami doi, aaron douglas, and winold reiss, and the bfa & mfa thesis exhibitions.annual attendance at the museum this year was over 13,000. We hosted many in-person educational programs and events, which included artists' talks, symposiums, workshops for children, and curator gallery tours. Below are just a few highlights:- we launched our inaugural visit from 8th graders at kingston's miller middle school, introducing them to ben wigfall's work and the campus print-making department, and inspiring them to create art on ben's press in the midtown art district's community print studio.- in partnership with our exhibition purple haze: art and drugs across the americas, local leaders discussed opioid epidemic initiatives in the hudson valley. - as part of our series that uses art as a catalyst for personal and collective wellness, professor andrea frank's "stepping into deep time" invited participants to explore communal futures through hands-on activities. - in conjunction with the global connections exhibition, suny new paltz art history students emily himes and ciera browne engaged in a q&a with celebrated art historians and writers christian crouch, patricia hills, margo machida, morgan parker, and tom wolf.audiences from across the hudson valley engaged with the museum as well, from k-12 school visits and artist workshops, to lifetime learning institute classes.

Athletics, wellness & recreationthe mission of the new paltz department of athletics, wellness and recreation within the division of student affairs is to sponsor a broad-based athletic, wellness and recreation program that provides transformational, educational and athletic opportunities for students to grow, to develop and to support the mission of the university by complementing and enhancing its diversity and quality of life. Through fundraising efforts, the athletics department was able to enhance student-athletes' experience through team travel, team uniforms, practice equipment, mental performance training, and team building activities.this year's athletic team's accomplishments include 5 state university of new york athletic conference (sunyac) championship titles, 5 player of the year recipients, 5 coach of the year honors, 55 all conference selections, 20 all-region selections, and 6 all-americans. In addition, 60% of athletes had a 3.4 gpa or higher.college of liberal arts & sciencesthe department of digital media & journalism at suny new paltz welcomed amanda sperber to the campus community as the fall 2023 james h. Ottaway sr. Visiting professor of journalism. Sperber is a multiple award-winning foreign correspondent and investigative fellow with code for africa, the largest civic technology and data journalism initiative on the continent. Sperber is an independent journalist and foreign correspondent whose work has appeared in al jazeera, the atlantic, the economist, foreign policy, the guardian, the intercept, the nation, nbc, marie claire, reuters, vice world news, and vogue, among other publications. She is a former logan nonfiction fellow, a fellow with type investigations, and an investigative fellow with code for africa, the continent's largest civic technology and data journalism initiative. Sperber won the thomson-reuters kurt schork memorial award in the freelancer category for her reportage in somalia. She has received grants from the pulitzer center for crisis reporting, the leonard c. Goodman institute for investigative reporting, and the united nations foundation, among others.as the ottaway visiting professor, she taught "international reporting", an undergraduate journalism seminar that explored the goals of international reporting, as well as its limits in the changing economics of the news industry. Students also examined the power dynamics and sensitivities at play when journalists are covering foreign events, particularly involving formerly colonized or currently occupied countries and communities.in addition, sperber engaged in two public presentations: a campus talk and a question-and-answer session with the university president.the political science department facilitated a trip for 21 students to washington dc. This three-day trip enabled students to see capitol hill, meet with suny new paltz alumni and government officials, allowing for invaluable networking opportunities.fund for new paltzthe fund for new paltz (ffnp) is an unrestricted foundation fund that makes it possible to provide programs and opportunities that enrich the experience of each student and our entire community, including events and lectures on campus, membership in the orange & blue network, and other opportunities provided by the suny new paltz foundation and the office of development & alumni relations.the funds allow for free admissions for students to the distinguished speakers series, women's leadership summit, president roundtable events, finals fuel (snacks during finals week), 100 days to commencement, networking events, as well as many other opportunities for students.the orange & blue network allows suny new platz students, alumni and supporters to connect in an online professional networking environment and to provide mentorship, internships, and connections to infinity groups.ffnp also supports the annual alumni reunion and multiple regional alumni events. Many of these events provide in-person networking and mentoring opportunities for both students and alumni.school of businessthe school of business' hudson valley venture hub (hvvh) is a state-designated innovation hot spot acting as a critical resource to the technology entrepreneurship ecosystem for the mid-hudson region's seven counties: westchester, rockland, putnam, orange, ulster, sullivan and dutchess. Hvvh is housed within one of the region's only public 4-year universities, suny new paltz, part of a 64-institution statewide higher education system. The hvvh has met and supported 500+ companies since its inception in 2018, and has a network of 2,000 advisors, service providers, and business leaders in the area. The hvvh's job is twofold: 1) to accelerate early-stage technology companies across the region and 2) to convene and connect the innovation ecosystem. The hvvh conducts programming to foster and grow the entrepreneurship ecosystem, from regional "entrepreneurship service provider meetings", investor-only meetups and higher education meetups where professors that teach entrepreneurship regionally, network and coordinate their efforts. Hvvh understands that building relationships and partnerships across the region and state are critical to this work.this year, hvvh had high-touch impact on 16 high-growth startups, reporting 27 new full time equivalent jobs, 34 retained jobs, $12.5m in private investment, $100,000 in cost savings, $900,000 in increased revenue, and $12,000 in grants-a total of over $13.5m in non-job impact in just six months (cumulatively). Won two sba growth fund accelerator competition awards, placing hvvh among the nation's top accelerators. The growth accelerator competition advances goals similar to eda's build to scale.the school of business was able to provide awards for the winning teams at the suny new paltz business plan competition as well as support for students to attend the business analytics competition and conference held at manhattan university.
