Mission

Grantmakers in the arts (gia) is a national network for private, public and corporate arts funders and provides leadership and service that advances the use of philanthropic and governmental resources to support the growth of arts and culture.

Programs

3 programs

Other programs: this program category includes research on support for individual artists; webinars and podcasts; research on philanthropic trends and issues; the national capitalization project; and publication of our online reader. Gia provides educational content for arts funders through a regularly changing newsfeed on its website; on-line webinars open to members and later available to the general public; public podcasts; an on-line publication (the gia reader) featuring trends and relevant issues; on-line workshops on sound capitalization principles for non-profit arts groups; and forums bringing funders together to discuss areas of concern for the field of arts philanthropy.

Expenses: $445K

Art education funders coalition: the arts education funders coalition (aefc) consists of a national group of grantmakers and advocates who engage with gia and our advocacy consultant penn hill group to advance the role of the arts in federal public policy. Most recently, gia worked with rep. Suzanne bonamici (d-or) on the development of the arts education for all act, the broadest arts education policy bill ever introduced in congress. Gia influenced the u.s. Department of education to highlight the importance of equitable access to arts and culture when determining how to reopen schools after the covid-19 pandemic lockdown.

Expenses: $157K

Racial equity in arts funding: gia, in conjunction with true north edi, leads virtual racial equiy in arts funding workshops with a national reach. A webinar available on the gia website features gia and consultants from race forward discussing the creation and perpetuation of the racial hierarchy, and provides guidance on institutional strategies for diversity, inclusion, and equity. Gia staff attended racial equity facilitation training to enhance workshop offerings.
