Outpatient clinics: the organization includes the henry ford medical group (hfmg),one of the nation's largest group practices, with more than 1,900 physicians and researchers in more than 40 specialties at locations throughout southeast and central michigan, encompassing approximately 2.6 million total outpatient encounters annually. Henry ford's medical centers are located in wayne, oakland, macomb and jackson counties. Some medical group physicians also are on staff at other henry ford hospitals. Six medical centers provide 24-hour emergency care with several providing ambulatory surgery and primary stroke care. Founded in 1915 after consultations with physicians at johns hopkins hospital and the mayo clinic, the henry ford medical group has established itself as one of the premier group practices in the nation. Our large academic enterprise places us in the top three of traditionally independent group practices through:clinical care: the breadth and depth of the henry ford medical group's clinical services is unparalleled by any other independent academic medical center. Our scale and scope are in the 99th percentile of all group practices, with visit volumes larger than most group practices. We are national leaders in primary care with expertise in preventive care services and the health management of senior citizens. Our specialty centers of excellence are national leaders as well, providing advanced tertiary and quaternary care with a focus on discovery and innovation.education: our post-graduate medical education enterprise is among the largest in the country. Approximately one third of all physicians in michigan formally trained at hf health during some point in their career.research: henry ford health is among top national institutes of health funded institutions in michigan.leaders in academic medicine and clinical care: the henry ford medical group is considered among the best organized in the country. Our self-governed, employed physician practice program has become a model for many others because of our continuing success. The brightest minds in medicine are attracted to become part of the henry ford medical group because our organization provides physicians the independence to pursue advanced clinical care while undertaking research as well as academic educational initiatives.for over 100 years the henry ford medical group has fostered advancement in patient care, research, and education while encouraging innovation in technology and patient care processes both in the outpatient and hospital settings. For these reasons henry ford medical group physicians are consistently selected by their physician peers as top doctors in various local and national published surveys and to lead national and state medical associations. Henry ford medical group physicians work together in leadership and as everyday partners to continue to bring the best possible care to every patient we serve.

Research is a vital component of the mission of henry ford health. Henry ford health's mission is to improve human life through excellence in the science and art of health care and healing. This mission is strongly supported and enhanced by the dedicated staff's pursuit of scientific advancement.since 1915, henry ford hospital physicians and scientists have focused their efforts on a wide variety of topics critical to understanding the mechanisms of disease and developing new, viable treatment options. Henry ford hospital basic science research involves over 85 full-time phd faculty and their support staff and focuses on the following; cardiovascular research, hypertension and kidney, cancer research, bone and joint research, neurosciences research, immunology research as well as others.much of henry ford hospital research is translational in nature - from bench to bedside. To this end, our basic science studies run the gamut from whole animal physiology to cell and molecular biology to bioengineering with an emphasis on studies that can directly impact patient care. Our population and health care research focuses on origins of childhood diseases, disease screening, prevention and management, health outcomes, disparities in care, and health economics. This group of researchers collaborates with members of the henry ford medical group as well as researchers in other states to enhance the quality of health care nationally. These studies are housed in the departments of public health sciences and the center for health policy and health services research.henry ford hospital scientists and physicians participate in and lead many clinical trials which help us understand how to best treat diseases. This is the mechanism by which new and potentially life-saving drugs are tested for safety and therapeutic efficacy. Altogether, there are greater than 1,800 active studies approved by our irb in our medical and surgical departments. By working together, doctor to doctor, nurse to doctor, researcher to physician, henry ford can maximize clinical innovations to provide the highest quality of care. The clinical trials office serves to identify and implement strategies for growing clinical research. Clinical trials are coordinated and run by physicians and research nurses in the majority of henry ford hospital departments. Internal medicine divisions involved in running significant numbers of clinical trials are allergy, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, infectious diseases, nephrology, pulmonary medicine and sleep medicine. Other departments with significant clinical research include emergency medicine, dermatology, neurology and neurosurgery, and all of our cancer sub-specialties.in 2024 hf health received $163 million in externally- awarded grants, contracts and sub-contracts, $44 million of which was awarded by nih and other federal agencies. The infrastructure at hf health allows us to have a research program far larger than other non-university-based health care systems in the state of michigan. Hf health ranks fourth in michigan in total nih funding and consitently ranks at the top in michigan for nih-research funding for non-university based health care systems. We are in the top 20% of all institutions granted funding by nih and u.s. Public health service.
